We research power electronics for transportation electrification, solid-state transformers, and energy storage systems — from new converter topologies to high-performance hardware prototypes.

    Two Presentations at IPEC-ECCE Asia 2026 in Nagasaki

    The lab presented two papers at the 10th International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-ECCE Asia 2026), held May 31 – June 4, 2026 in Nagasaki, Japan.

    MSc student JT Luterbach presented “Fully Closed-Loop Control with Propagation Delay Compensation for the Soft-Switched Bidirectional Phase-Shifted Full Bridge Converter” (co-authors: Andrew M. Knight, Philippe Gray).

    Dr. Gray presented “Three-Phase AC–DC Single-Stage MMC Enabled by Bidirectional-Switch Based Submodules with Ultra-Low-Capacitance” (co-authors: Khai Huynh, Flávio Alegretti Ramos, Phuc Luong).

    CFI JELF Grant for Medium-Voltage Test Facility

    Dr. Gray has received a Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leaders Fund (CFI JELF) grant for the project “Advanced Medium-Voltage Test Facility for Next-Generation Power Electronics & Drives: Accelerating Clean Tech Adoption.” The grant will support the development of infrastructure for testing advanced power electronics and drives, enabling research that accelerates the adoption of clean energy technologies. The award was part of a UCalgary round of 19 CFI JELF-funded projects announced in October 2025.

    Best Presentation Recognition for JT Luterbach at IECON 2024

    Congratulations to MSc student JT Luterbach on receiving a Best Presentation Recognition at the 50th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2024) for his paper “Switch Current-Based Closed-Loop Control for ZCS Bidirectional Current-Fed DC-DC Converters.” Well done, JT!
